How dangerous is paraquat?
Paraquat is very dangerous. Contact with paraquat causes "direct damage" to the user's skin, mouth, stomach, and intestines, as well as poisonous chemical effects throughout the consumer's body.
Paraquat poisoning occurs through ingestion, inhalation, or contact with paraquat. Due to its high toxicity, Paraquat is banned in 32 countries including the European Union. However, paraquat is still one of the most widely used herbicides in the world.
Since 2000, twenty people have died from accidental ingestion or inhalation of paraquat, and from the release of herbicides into the skin or eyes. In 2016, the US Environmental Protection Agency started finalizing steps to end paraquat poisoning.
