"Desanka Maksimovic" National Library, Lopare

The library in Lopare dates back to 1936, when the first one was founded, with a meager fund of books, but sufficient to enlighten the population of these parts.

The present National Library, bearing the name of the greatest Serbian poetess, Desanka Maksimoviĉ, was estabilished in 1955, with only 375 books provided, but with a readreship far exceeding the available books - 501 people took membership. Somewhat better administration was introduced in 1958, when the 728 books of the library were transferred to the cinema. That year us taken as the official founding of the library in Lopare.

Following the then organisation of cultural organisations, the library was part of so-called National University, where, because of the heterogenity of its activity, it could not attain to its rightful significance.

Better times came with 1992, and the Desanka Maksimovic National Library now exists as an independent institution with 13,725 catalogued items and 4,492 titles. It has 627 members - most of them pupils and students - but also including workers, pensioners and farmers.
