Agriculture and food production in Lopare Municipality has in recent years shared the fate of the people of these parts, who were caught up in a vicious war.

Before this misfortune, this region was renowned for its fruit production, especially that of plums. Much had been invested in livestock breeding and other branches of agriculture, but because of the ravages of war, breeding stock was decimated, orchards were neglected and farm machinery destroyed. Agricultural cooperatives, due to decreased economic strength, can no longer be the strong connection they once were between farming and the state sector.

In this post-war renewal of agriculture, especially in the private sector, a real revitalisation is occurring -difficult and slow, but sure. The majority of rural households still count agriculture as their basic activity, this lending hope that this economic branch, and food production in general, will find the place it deserves.

The Municipality of Lopare has 16,830 hectares of arable land, which in hilly country counts as a good base for food production. Three agricultural cooperatives are in operation:
